We'll announce when the transcripts are ready." >< RichardWhite says, "First of all, my thanks to Double D for his Gaston 3:16 sign." >< Mickey says, "We have a lot of questions lined up, so let's get right to the first one..."" >< First question: >< (Mickey) Is every last inch of you really covered with hair? If so, how much does your barber charge for a haircut? ;-) >< >< Mickey grins >< Mickey says, "Richard, the question basically is how similar you are to the character Gaston..." >< RichardWhite says, "Funny you should ask. If you knew how many memos went back and forth trying to figure out what that hair should look like." >< RichardWhite says, "They took a lot of pictures while we were auditioning." >< RichardWhite says, "Gaston also went through a lot of metamorphosis during the creation of the film. He ended up with a lot of me in him." >< Next question: >< (Double_D) How were you approached with the role of Gaston from Disney? >< >< RichardWhite says, "It was what we call an agents call. That is to say an open audition." >< RichardWhite says, "Everyone and his uncle auditioned for the role!" >< Mickey says, "Was it your first film role?" >< RichardWhite says, "It was my first feature film role. I had done some TV before." >< Next question: >< (Double_D) Did you work with the animators or the writers when it came to developing the character of Gaston? Did you work with Andreas Deja? >< >< RichardWhite says, "Actually, quite a bit. It was an amazingly cooperative process." >< RichardWhite says, "The character underwent a lot of changes, both physically and in other ways." >< RichardWhite says, "I think the Disney people were concerned about portraying a villain as an attractive character." >< Mickey says, "Do you remember some of the things you suggested Gaston should be, and can you share them with us? What kind of changes did Gaston undergo?" >< RichardWhite says, "Originally he was much more Brutish. Looked rather like Bluto. We got him much more beautiful." >< Mickey says, "The Gaston laugh is rather unique. Was that something you came up with, Richard?" >< RichardWhite says, "Absolutely! Nothing like mine at all. Uniquely Gaston." >< RichardWhite grins sheepishly >< Mickey says, "Sure does seem to fit him. :-)" >< RichardWhite says, "Thanks!" >< Mickey says, "Here's the next question." >< Next question: >< (Double_D) Did you ever think that BatB would be such a huge hit? What was your reaction when the film was given the Best Picture nomination? >< >< RichardWhite says, "We were ecstatic! Never before or since had an animated film been given the nod for Best Film" >< RichardWhite says, "We did know that Disney approached these films with great respect. You sort of had the feeling that you were working on a classic in the making" >< RichardWhite says, "Very exciting, indeed" >< Mickey says, "I think it is something Walt would have been proud to call a masterpiece, by the way." >< RichardWhite says, "Thanks, Mickey. I really am very proud of the film. " >< Mickey says, "Did you grow up watching Walt Disney on television?" >< RichardWhite says, "Of course. Didn't we all. It was a major part of the week on Sunday night" >< Mickey says, "OK, let's go back to the questions in the queue. Sorry for stepping in with my own, folks!" >< Mickey smiles >< Next question: >< (Tahamaki) In order to do the lines for Gaston, did you feel like you had to physically become the character? >< >< RichardWhite says, "I'd say no, but looking back at the sessions I have to admit I did bluster and strut." >< RichardWhite says, "By the way and apropros of a previous question, do folks know that the sessions are filmed?" >< Mickey says, "All of them?" >< RichardWhite says, "Yep. That way the animators can watch the performers and capture more effectively the expressions" >< Mickey says, "Do you recognize some of your physical acting in how the animators chose to portray Gaston, similar to how you read the lines?" >< RichardWhite says, "I must tell you, there are things Gaston does that I have only seen in the mirror or in my daughter's face. An amazing testament to the animator's art... especially Andreas's." >< Mickey grins and claps for both Richard and Andreas. >< Next question: >< (Sherlock) Do you "get into" an animated role like actors can in a live action part? >< >< RichardWhite says, "If I understand your question, then I'd say sure. As I said, we strut and fume and generally have a ball in the sessions." >< Next question: >< (JiminyCricket) Of all the musicals you've played, which are your favorite role and favorite song? >< >< RichardWhite says, "My general answer is--Whichever one I'm doing...but the Yeston/Kopit Phantom and Billy Bigelow have to be special. There's a new one--Jeckyl and Hyde (not the B'way one) that's great, too." >< Mickey says, "Follow-up from JiminyCricket... What's your favorite song from the roles you've portrayed?" >< RichardWhite says, "That's a really tough one, Jiminy... The soliloquy from Carousel?" >< Next question: >< (Esmeralda) What was the most fulfilling part of working on a Disney animated feature? >< >< RichardWhite says, "Watching the face of my daughter (about 6 years old at the time) when the film was first shown at the NY film festival." >< Next question: >< (Mickey) Which do you prefer... acting on stage or in animated feature movies? Would you like to do another role for Disney? >< >< RichardWhite says, "I'd love to do another animated feature! Disney is a little protective of the vocal sounds of their characters. The really distinctive ones are hard to re-use. " >< Mickey waves to Richard's agent in the audience. >< RichardWhite says, "Hi, to my agent!" >< Mickey says, "Did you like working as Gaston better than acting on stage?" >< RichardWhite says, "They offer different satisfactions!" >< Mickey says, "Good answer. :-)" >< RichardWhite says, "Doing Gaston was like nothing I'd ever done before." >< RichardWhite says, "So is acting on stage." >< RichardWhite says, "I'd never give up one for the other!" >< Mickey says, "I've gotta ask you... do you really use antlers in all of your decorating?" >< Mickey winks >< RichardWhite says, "Most of it" >< RichardWhite winks back >< RichardWhite says, "Only Mickey's ears could be in danger, and I promise to forbear!" >< Mickey says, "Heh-heh!! Speaking of ears... Phil asks a follow-up to my question and wants to know... since Gaston bites in wrestling matches, did you give any pointers to Mike Tyson?" >< Mickey is all ears and is worried about that. >< RichardWhite says, "I pointed to the ref and screamed, "Did you see that?"" >< Mickey giggles >< Next question: >< (MuSE) Did you find it challenging to act with just your voice when you were doing Beauty and the Beast? >< >< RichardWhite says, "Doing an animated feature is really like an actor's sand-box. Using only your voice makes it more fun!" >< Mickey says, "OK, next question... from the queue line" >< Next question: >< (Mickey) Do you prefer playing villains or good guys? >< >< Mickey says, "Gosh! It was my question anyway. ;-)" >< RichardWhite says, "Villains are sometimes more fun, cause they're less inhibited. The trick is to find what you like about them." >< Mickey says, "Follow-up from Rufus... What did you find to like about the villain Gaston?" >< RichardWhite says, "Any character who is as in love with himself as Gaston has to be loveable. He really is the best at everything. And he loves that!" >< RichardWhite says, "I really got into that quality of him." >< Next question: >< (Sherlock) Since you do work in voice characterizations, have you done any any books-on-tape sort of work? >< CHIME> CUCKOO! >< RichardWhite says, "Not yet, but I'd love to. Mostly I've been either in shows or in concert, though" >< Next question: >< (Esmeralda) Has your life changed since being in a Disney film? How? >< >< RichardWhite says, "Probably. For example, you all wouldn't be here if I hadn't done the film." >< RichardWhite says, "I suppose there have been offers that might not have been made otherwise." >< RichardWhite says, "It really is less obvious than you might think." >< Next question: >< (Mickey) Which of the other voice actors did you record with, or did you do all of your work for BatB alone? >< >< RichardWhite says, "Disney generally has the actors work alone, but I had the chance to work with Paige and Jessie on several occasions." >< Mickey says, "Paige O'Hara, the lovely Belle. Jessie is Lafou?" >< RichardWhite says, "Yep. I also worked with Jerry Orbach and Angela Lansbury when we were in musical sessions." >< Mickey says, "Follow-up from Sherlock: How can you get the feel of the scene while acting alone?" >< RichardWhite says, "You have the freedom to go wherever your imagination leads you. Then they go back and forth to the other actors to make all the best ideas fit together" >< RichardWhite says, "It takes a while. I worked on the film for about two and a half years" >< Next question: >< (Esmeralda) What other projects have you worked on/are you working on? >< >< Mickey says, "There was quite an extensive list of roles you've had, in the announcement we posted about this chat. You are quite prolific as well as talented, Richard!" >< RichardWhite says, "I'm doing a lot of concert work. I'm also starting work on a new Musical, "The betrayal of Nora Blake." Fun" >< Mickey says, "When you recorded for so long, did you redo any of the scenes, doing them many different ways?" >< RichardWhite says, "Absolutely! At each session, each line would be done many times. Then if someone had a good idea it would all be done again." >< RichardWhite says, "Very collaborative and great fun" >< Next question: >< (Rufus) If you could have any role in any play or musical that you *haven't* yet done, what would it be? >< >< RichardWhite says, "I'm looking forward to growing into roles like "The Music Man" and "Man of La Mancia"" >< Next question: >< (Dr.Hutchinson) How did Gaston's personality develop (like, was he a semi-decent guy at first)? >< >< RichardWhite says, "Not at all! He was totally dispicable. We had to try to find some redeeming characteristics so the townsfolk weren't fools for liking him." >< Next question: >< (Belle) How different did you feel the voice acting process is from performing on stage since they both involve using/projecting your voice more than, say, acting for a film might. >< >< RichardWhite says, "Actually I think it just concentrates your vocal process. On stage you need the vocal projection. In a film you need the same quality of characterization, if less projection." >< Next question: >< (CzarJim) In addition to the recording sessions, did the animators ask you to act other scenes for them? >< >< Mickey says, "CzarJim, what do you mean.... other than scenes from Beauty and the Beast?" >< Mickey says, "OK, here's what he meant..." >< Mickey says, "Did they ask you to physically act out scenes, away from the microphones, to get the full physical range of the character?" >< RichardWhite says, "No, not physically, other than the filming. They did hire other actors to do physical stunts, etc. so they could draw them more accurately." >< RichardWhite says, "Mickey, there is someone who needs to be remembered when we talk about B&B...Howard Ashman." >< Mickey says, "That's very true, Richard. Tell us about what it was like working with Howard Ashman on the movie." >< RichardWhite says, "Howard really was the genius behind Disney's revival of the artform of animated musical film." >< RichardWhite says, "He fought Jeffrey Katzenberg time and again to maintain his vision, and Jeffrey had the good sense to let him win." >< Mickey says, "Before Beauty and the Beast there was The Little Mermaid and The Rescuers Down Under. Did you see any of them prior to getting the role as Gaston, and did either of those movies influence your decision to try for the role in BatB?" >< RichardWhite says, "I did see them both. And they only made me that much happier to have been cast. Honestly, I would have tried for the role regardless." >< RichardWhite says, "Don't forget I have a daughter. Of course I saw them." >< Mickey grins >< RichardWhite says, "When I saw Alan Menken for the musical sessions, I told him I didn't know whether to curse him or thank him since I had been hearing Ariel sing in my ear for months" >< RichardWhite says, "He told me he too had been suffering, as his daughters were about the same age" >< Mickey says, "If you could convince Disney today to let you start acting in another Disney role for an animated feature, what would it be?" >< Mickey says, "Would you like another role like Gaston, or something completely different?" >< RichardWhite says, "I always like doing something different." >< RichardWhite says, "I really don't know what I'd like next." >< Mickey says, "Disney, make him an offer!" >< Mickey grins >< RichardWhite grins! >< Mickey says, "JiminyCricket follows-up, wondering what Disney role you would like to have done that others have already done -- if you could have been the one to first portray that role instead?" >< RichardWhite says, "I think lately Disney has done better by their women than their men. Pocohontas, Esmerelda. Hercules was less interesting to me." >< RichardWhite says, "I give up. What would you suggest?" >< Mickey says, "Well, would you have liked to be Mickey? ;-)" >< RichardWhite says, "N oone could possibly do him justice, but you!" >< Mickey says, "Gosh! Thanks." >< Next question: >< (Angela) Nice to meet you! Have you ever been asked to play Gaston on Broadway? Would you want to? >< >< RichardWhite says, "It's funny. None of us really wanted to do Broadway. We worked so hard to breathe dimension into our characters that to try to recreate a two dimensional film would have been anticlimatic" >< Next question: >< (CzarJim) Do you record with the orchestra, or are the vocal tracks done separately? >< >< RichardWhite says, "Both! We put down the vocals with the orchestra, and then went back separately when there were problems." >< Mickey says, "Problems?" >< RichardWhite says, "You know, somebody dropped a cup. Someone missed a lyric. That sort of thing." >< Mickey drops his Mouse-ke-cola by mistake and blushes. >< Mickey says, "uh-oh" >< Next question: >< (Phil) How can you read this stuff? It has no pictures! >< >< Mickey grins >< Mickey says, "Good one, Phil!" >< RichardWhite says, "Yours has no pictures?" >< Mickey says, "Dang! I knew I shoulda upgraded my computer" >< RichardWhite says, "You tell me?!" >< Mickey has a picture of Belle as a mermaid he could show you... >< Mickey winks >< RichardWhite says, "I've seen it already. I've also had the good luck to work with Jodi Benson many times!" >< Mickey says, "Richard, what other things do you remember about working with Howard Ashman?" >< RichardWhite says, "Howard really was responsible for casting the films as though they were Broadway shows. To that end he wanted Broadway actors who knew how to develop and portray three dimensional characters. I think it shows in the end result" >< Mickey says, "Sure does" >< RichardWhite says, "and I think the films after he was gone suffer for the lack of him." >< Mickey agrees, and greatly misses the genius of Howard Ashman's work >< RichardWhite says, "I don't say that to denigrate the more recent films, only to point out how wonderful his work really was" >< Next question: >< (Phil) Do you think the enchanted Christmas would have been better with Gaston? =;o) >< >< RichardWhite says, "But of course!! Remember, you never saw Gaston's body. I'm not sure he didn't survive that fall!" >< Next question: >< (Rufus) Have you seen BatB on Broadway? What do you think of it? >< >< RichardWhite says, "I did. I wasn't all that interested. As I said, we tried to make the animated characters three dimensional. On Broadway they try to be cartoons. Lots of gunpowder, though." >< RichardWhite says, "Perhaps I have overstated it. The audiences love the show." >< Mickey says, "Each is a unique experience. There's no way to duplicate either in those two different mediums" >< RichardWhite says, "Very true" >< Next question: >< (Double_D) Le Fou is asking me if you would like more beer? >< >< RichardWhite says, "What's the use?" >< Mickey grins >< RichardWhite winks >< Mickey says, "And you better not do that at the Magic Kingdom!" >< RichardWhite says, "Actually the Magic Kingdom has pretty good beer, too." >< Next question: >< (Phil) Will you propose to Belle afterwards? =:o) >< >< RichardWhite says, "Propose what? After what?" >< Mickey says, "Phil was referring to a fanfic story about Gaston's Ghost when he asked if Gaston would propose to Belle, I guess after his death. Do you think he would and do you think he died?" >< RichardWhite says, "I can't possibly believe such a great character could just die...As for the proposal, I don't think Gaston really thinks its necessary. Belle just has to come to her senses." >< Mickey says, "We've got one more question..." >< Next question: >< (Juliet) I've heard that voices are recorded long before the drawing. How do you get the feel of what you're character is supposed to be doing? >< >< RichardWhite says, "Although the voices are recorded first, the artists then go to work. When they draw themselves into a corner, they come back to the voices and you re-record. As I said it is a very collaborative process." >< Mickey says, "Richard, we have a couple of surprises for you, if you can stay around just a few more minutes... Is that all right?" >< RichardWhite says, "Sure" >< Mickey says, "First of all, here's someone you "know"..." Belle comes onstage from the Auditorium. >< Belle says, "hi there!" >< Mickey says, "Belle!" >< RichardWhite blushes deeply Belle puts Plush Beast down. Plush Beast looks about and starts exploring his new environment. >< Belle looks around for Beast, doesn't see him here, and gives Richard White a sloppy wet kiss. >< Mickey says, "Heh-heh!" >< Belle says, "Thank you for coming to speak with us!" Plush Beast eeps a plush eep! >< RichardWhite blushes even more deeply. >< RichardWhite says, "Thank YOU!!" >< Mickey says, "Yes, thank you very much, Richard" >< Belle says, "Plush Beast also says hi in his own way." Plush Beast eeps an excited plush eep! >< RichardWhite says, "eep, eep" >< Mickey says, "Tonight Mary Kay Bergman was trying to come on and surprise you, too..." >< Mickey says, "She was two of the silly girls in the movie." >< Mickey says, "Did you ever meet her?" >< RichardWhite says, "Nope. Is it too late?" >< Mickey grins >< Mickey says, "Well, she wasn't able to show up... maybe she had the same problems you first did with connecting" >< Belle smiles. >< Mickey says, "Also, Phil in the audience will have a present for you, when we go down there." >< RichardWhite smiles and blushes once more >< Belle says, "On behalf of AmberThree Productions, please give a big hand for Richard White!" >< Mickey claps loudly! >< RichardWhite waves >< Mickey says, "Belle, do you have an announcement about transcripts?" >< Belle says, "Yes. Transcripts will be available in a few days, from the usual EMuck ftp and web sites. See 'news' for when it's out." >< RichardWhite smiles, trips over his cape and falls down >< Mickey says, "Richard, please join us in going into the audience, to meet your fans!" RichardWhite leaves the podium and heads through the door to the Arbordale Auditorium. Mickey leaves the podium and heads through the door to the Arbordale Auditorium. Plush Beast leaves the podium and heads through the door to the Arbordale Auditorium. Belle leaves the podium and heads through the door to the Arbordale Auditorium. (for the chold's sake) Mickey says, "My son's middle name is Colby. :-)" MuSE has left. RichardWhite says, "Sharon worked with Susan in sacramento, a South Pacific, if memory serves." Belle thinks Plush Beast wants to know if you would have tried to stab him if he was in the movie instead of real Beast, Mr. White. Double_D exclaims, "That's a cheesy name, Mickey!" MuSE comes in from Mickey's Cyber Diner and takes a seat near you. Mickey bows Phil plays his Syranix. Belle notes that Plush Beast cannot talk "human speech" and doesn't know how to work the REQUEST feature, since he is only a Plush. Plush Beast eeps an emphatic plush eep! Angela sings "Look there he goes, isn't he dreamy! Monsier Gaston, Oh he's so cute! Be still, my heart, I'm hardly breathing! He's such a tall dark strong and handsome brute!" Mickey works on making a plush button with REQUEST on it Belle snirg! Belle says, "cute, Angela. :)" Mickey claps for Angela Double_D says, "Good, Angela." RichardWhite says, "ain't it true" Angela grins Mickey says, "Richard, now you know why we have it so no one onstage can hear the audience during the chats. ;-)" MuSE exclaims, "Gaston, you're the greatest hunter in the whole world! No Beast alive stands a chance against you -- and no girl for that matter!"" RichardWhite says, "Plush beast and Gaston could probably have deep conversations together" Phil says, "Walk with the plushies talk with the plushies, grunt and squeak and talk with the plushies..." Angela knows most of B&TB by heart! o/~ Spam, spam, spam, wonderful spam!!! Belle says, "We'll send you an unofficial transcript of everything in the audience for your enjoyment later, Richard." MuSE grins at Angela... Plush Beast eeps an excited plush eep! Phil says, "Oh, he'll love that. =;o)" RichardWhite says, "Oh, Phil...groan" Belle thinks Plush Beast would like Gaston as he might be able to eat some of those half dozen eggs eaten every morning. Phil says, "Merry christmas, Mr. White. =:o)" Mickey says, "And for the official transcript I'll clean up anything spelled incorrectly, and out of order lines, plus you can make any other revisions you'd like before we post the transcript, Richard." Plush Beast's plush ears perk up at the mention of food. JiminyCricket asks, "That's five dozen eggs, Belle, but who's counting?" Angela says, "My Gaston ghost story is on a friend's web page if anyone is interested." RichardWhite says, "Thanks, Phil, you too." Plush Beast holds out his plush paws. Mickey says, "The version of the transcript with the audience comments during the chat doesn't get posted. :-)" Rufus asks, "Really, Angela? What's the URL?" Angela says, "http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Academy/7091/index.html" Angela says, "it's under creative collections" Double_D exclaims, "Good thing too!" Phil says, "I am counting...I asked my father how many eggs Gaston eats in the morning, and he missed it. =;o)" MuSE wonders what comments she made during the chat... Plush Beast licks his plush lips and hopes for an egg to eat. Double_D waves his hand and makes an egg appear. Phil says, "I prefer eating shoes myself." RichardWhite says, "There is a lovely lady who is updating and relocating a web page for me, too. She asks that email be sent to KAAZMW@[...]" Plush Beast holds out his plush paws and reaches for the egg. Mickey says, "You are inviting e-mail from all your fans to be sent to KAAZMW@[...], Richard?" RichardWhite says, "That's what she said..." Double_D says, "It's hard-boiled, fortunately." Mickey says, "Richard, I'm so sorry you had problems getting things set up, and then you had a bad connection tonight that was slowing things down so much. That was the first slowdown we've ever had like that with a special chat." Double_D gives the egg to PB. Belle reminds Plush Beast to eat with manners or he will get himself dirty and have to take the dreaded bath. Plush Beast sits down on his plush bottom to eat the egg. Lips exclaims, "Not the bath!" Belle says, "you're right, Richard, Plush Beast and Gaston would get along famously." RichardWhite says, "I'm just glad when I reconnected it seemed to work out." Rufus says, "Don't forget to unzip it first, PB." JiminyCricket says, "Gee, my time is up for the night, gotta go. Goodnight, everyone. And thanks again, Mr. White, for coming to chat!" Phil shall send you shoes...every day of your mortal life. =;o) Plush Beast opens his plush jaws wide and swallows the egg whole! Angela says, "It's midnight here" Rufus can't believe it either, unless Muse is in Nova Scotia or something. Phil says, "11:06." Mickey exclaims, "Oh, my gosh! Richard, you're on the East Coast and it's 1 am. Thanks for staying up so late with us!" RichardWhite asks, "Does plush beast know what an egg will do to his digestion at this hour?" MuSE grins... Belle doesn't think so, Mr. White. Plush Beast has plush for brains. Plush Beast burps another plush burp! Phil says, "I gotta trot off now, all." Max glances around. Double_D says, "I think PB's got gas." RichardWhite says, "Burps will be the least of his problems" Rufus asks, "Plush Beast's digestion? Can you say 'Pumbaa'?" Mickey giggles MuSE laughs! Plush Beast burps yet another plush burp! Rufus exclaims, "Nite, Phil!" Phil pets Rufus. Rufus purrs. Plush Beast's plush fur turns a plush shade of green! RichardWhite says, "It has been fun.
